Hershey High Schoolâs Construction Class got hands-on experience with concrete work in September. The class was able to see a sidewalk project through from start to finish.
Prior to the pouring of concrete, students removed the old broken concrete, set forms, leveled the surface grade, and calculated the cubic yards of concrete needed for the project.
The students then explored the best materials for the cost of the project. âWe had originally planned on using Sakrete,â said instructor Will Winchester, âbut after research and price checks we ended up getting the concrete truck because it was less expensive.â
Croell provided concrete as the Construction Class members poured, leveled, floated, and finished the project. While on site, the representative from Croell was able to provide some on-the-job technique training, and the students were able to immediately transfer learning to skill.
From start to finish, the project took about a week. Winchester stated, âThe boys did excellent work.â
The class has moved on to their next project: a 28x28 garage with a living area above. Framing walls has begun and sheeting is expected to begin next week. This project will allow students to strengthen many construction skills while also learning about on-the-job safety requirements.
