Dear K-3 Parents,
We are excited to share with you an important update about our approach to reading instruction, which is rooted in the Science of Reading. But what exactly is the Science of Reading? It’s a body of research that guides how reading skills are best developed in children. This research emphasizes the importance of systematic and explicit phonics instruction as a key component of learning to read effectively.
To support this, we are implementing a program called Really Great Reading. This program is designed to provide a more in-depth and structured phonics curriculum, helping students build a strong foundation in reading. It focuses on teaching students the fundamental skills they need to decode words and understand the rules and patterns of the English language.
What does this mean for you and your child? One of the changes you will notice is that there will no longer be a weekly spelling list sent home for students in grades K-3. Instead, your child will be working on spelling words that align with the phonics concepts and rule patterns they are learning in their lessons each week. This approach ensures that students are not just memorizing words, but truly understanding the "why" behind spelling, which is essential for long-term reading and writing success.
We believe this shift will greatly benefit our students by providing them with the tools they need to become confident and proficient readers. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support!
