Ambrosia Legg's love for reading results in books being sent abroad

May 29, 2018

Hershey sophomore, Ambrosia Legg, has loved to read since she can remember.  Her passion for this has resulted in a small project to send books and school supplies to a primary school in Jamaica.

Following a trip to Jamaica in March, her Spanish teacher, Mrs. DaMoude, was sharing stories with her students regarding the poverty level in Jamaica as well many countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.  Ambrosia started thinking about  her love for reading and she said to Mrs. DaMoude:  "I want every child to be exposed to books and have the opportunity to love to read like I do."  She then asked if she could start a collection at the school and ask the students to bring some of their old childhood books.  Ambrosia spoke to each of the Spanish classes and asked for lightly used books and school supplies.

She and Mrs DaMoude then made contact with an elementary school in Jamaica and sent several boxes full of books, notebooks, pencils, etc, In addition, they sent hand sanitizer and toothpaste as the director of the school stated that hand sanitizer and other toiletry items are expensive because all of this has to be imported into Jamaica.  Ambrosia and other students are excited to think that some other child will receive something that was valuable to them as a child.  Ambrosia plans to do something similar this next school year.
